The Forty-Seventh Annual
Mississippi Literary Competition
for high school students in SHORT STORY, POETRY, ESSAY, AND DRAMA
Sponsored by Millsaps College and St. Andrew’s Episcopal School 1st Place: $200 each category 2nd Place: $150 each category 3rd Place: $100 each category
RULES: 1. Any Mississippi high school student in grades 10-12 may enter. 2. A student may enter one story, one essay, a maximum of three poems, and a one-act play. 3. Maximum length: Short story, 2500 words; Essay, 1500 words (personal essays only—no academic essays); Poem, 50 lines each; Drama, one-act play of 4000 words. 4. Only unpublished, uncopyrighted, and unpatented work will be accepted. (Exception: publication in school literary journal) 5. Entry fee: $5.00 per submission in each category. 6. Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced (except poetry), on one side of good quality 8½ X 11 paper (computer paper acceptable). 7. Separate title page must include:
- Name, home address, telephone number and e-mail address of writer (writer’s name must not appear elsewhere)
- Name and e-mail address of teacher and name, telephone number and address of school presently attended by writer
- Category entered
- Title of entry (to be repeated on upper right-hand corner of each manuscript page). NOTE: include only one title page per group of poems by a single writer.
- Do not staple title page to entry. Please use a paper clip.
8. Entries must be postmarked no later than FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd, 2013. Manuscripts will be judged by members of the Millsaps English Department. Manuscripts will not be returned. 9. Teachers of winning writers will be notified the week of April 15, 2013, so they may inform their students. Winners’ work will be published on the St. Andrew’s web site.
