Dear St. Andrew’s Community;
Over the next three weeks, the Upper School journalism class and the 11th grade American history classes are looking for veterans of WWII. Our oral history project, entitled A Salute to the Greatest Generation, will collect memories and artifacts from the 1930’and 40’s, when the whole world went to war. We will share this collection in the lobby of the Center for Performing Arts during Ray McFarland’s production of South Pacific, this year’s spring musical.
First-hand accounts will make history come to life while giving the students important skills in interviewing and an opportunity to connect with an older generation. These links will enrich their understanding of this time in history as well as highlighting the vast array of personal stories that make up the St. Andrew’s community. As the greatest generation ages, we must take this opportunity to learn about the technical, scientific and social wartime advances from the individuals that actually brought them about.
Our first project, Hail to the Heroes, will be a collage composed from electronically scanned photographs. So, our fist task is to locate pictures of veterans in uniform, men and women in period clothes, and photos taken by soldiers themselves. We request you scan photos in JPG format and send them electronically to me. We are planning a display that would include the images and a description of their link to St. Andrew’s . (Example: My father’s photo would show him in his uniform with the caption Master Sergeant Louis J. Dasovich, 1st Army, 37th Infantry, South Pacific, 3 Bronze Stars. Father to Candiss Woolverton; Grandfather to Chris and Lucy Woolverton.)
Please scan your photos, label them, and send them to: woolvertonca@gosaints.org
All Materials must be received before January 27th.
If you know a veteran or even someone who could give us a child’s view of life during wartime, please let me know their names and phone numbers or e-mail addresses so we can incorporate them into our list of possible contacts.
Thank you in advance for sharing your memories and helping us bring the past to life. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
