 | | Qu Named 2012 PopStar | |
Senior Phillip Qu has been named Mississippi’s 2012 PopStar for tennis by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. Phillip’s award recognizes him as the top high school tennis player in the state, regardless of school size or affiliation. The PopStars Awards honor the excellence and dedication of the state’s top high school athletes. The honorees are selected by a statewide panel of sports media voters who narrow the field to the top three athletes in all 22 high school sports, billed as “The Best 3 Athletes in Every Sport,” and a second vote is held to determine the winner. St. Andrew’s was represented by one other athlete: freshman Alex Good was a finalist for swimming. The PopStars Awards are named for W.C. “Pop” Allen, the long-time athletic director for Jackson Public Schools.

 | | Biswas Scores Perfect ACT | |
Junior Aritra Biswas, son of Pradip and Raka Biswas of Madison, earned a top composite score of 36 on a recent ACT test. Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, roughly one-tenth of one percent receive a top score. Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2011, only 704 of more than 1.6 million students earned a composite score of 36. The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student's composite score is the average of the four test scores.
In a letter recognizing this exceptional achievement, ACT CEO Jon Whitmore said, “While test scores are just one of the many criteria that most colleges consider when making admission decisions, your exceptional ACT composite score should prove helpful as you pursue your education and career goals.”

 | | Huang Wins Chess State Championship | |
On Saturday Sophomore David Huang won the high school division of the State Scholastic Individual Chess Championship. His victory came with a $1,000 scholarship, a large trophy, and the opportunity to represent Mississippi at the Denker Tournament of National High School Champions, to be held next August in Vancouver, Washington. Despite the fact that we will be graduating four seniors from this year’s chess team, with David, James Zheng, and newcomer Joe Han, St. Andrew’s should be well positioned to compete for the State Team Championship next year!

 | | Baseball Ends 2012 Season as Regional Champions | |
The 2012 Saints baseball season came to a close with a game 3 loss to Southeast Lauderdale in the South State Championship Series last week (the Madison County Journal has a good article about the series). The Saints ended their regional championship season with an overall record of 24-10, 7-1 in district play. In 2013 the Saints are looking forward to an especially strong team, as this year’s team had no senior players on the roster. Go Saints! | | | |
