The Athletics Program

DeWayne Cupples, Athletics Director

The Athletic Department of St. Andrew’s is committed to providing a wide variety of competitive, interscholastic sports teams for its student body while embracing the school’s mission to encourage “spiritual growth, moral responsibility, and academic excellence.” Sports are an integral part of the St. Andrew’s community and serve to provide its participants with those developmental traits inherent in the athletic experience: the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie, the struggle to achieve, and the attainment of common goals.

Teams are established, staffed, and supported in all sports approved and sanctioned by the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) and are operated in accordance with the Constitution and bylaws of the MHSAA. In order for a team sport to gain varsity recognition at St. Andrew’s, that sport must be part of the MHSAA state championship sports program; however, where feasible, the Athletic Department may make available practice areas, equipment and school supervision for club sport organizations.

The St. Andrew’s athletic program provides a level of competition appropriate to the age, development, ability and interest of all of its students. While varsity competition places a greater emphasis on winning, the purpose of sub-varsity teams is to develop skills and prepare athletes physically and mentally for the varsity level. St. Andrew’s coaches place the individual student-athlete foremost while providing a healthy balance between winning and the enjoyment of the team experience.
