A hallmark of St. Andrew’s is our commitment to regularly examining all aspects of our school to ensure we can fulfill our mission and meet the evolving needs of our community. To do this, we often look beyond our walls to understand emerging trends and best practices at other premier schools. One trend we’ve followed over the past several years is a growing number of schools addressing the topic of civil discourse within their policy statements and curriculum. This has come, in large part, as a response to growing concerns about the state of civil discourse in our country.
In the Fall of 2023, we assembled a small committee composed of students, faculty, administration, parents, alumni, and trustees to draft a document articulating how we can promote civil discourse within our community. The committee reviewed similar documents crafted by other leading educational institutions (both at the secondary and higher education levels), analyzed case studies involving matters of difference and disagreement, and discussed both the nature of civil discourse in an academic community and the fundamental skills and underlying philosophies that enable it.
St. Andrew's statement on civil discourse includes:
A definition of civil discourse and what it really means Skills that support civil discourse in our school community How we engage in critical thinking How we value and cherish free expression How civil discourse challenges us...together
